Federal
Nutrition Program Overview
The
Federal Nutrition Programs are government funded food programs designed
to improve the nutrition, well-being, and food security of low-income
Americans. They function as a nutritional safety net for millions
of low-income people. The programs allow individuals and families
to stretch their food dollars and access healthy food. The programs
are administered through the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) on a national level and various agencies on the state and
local level.
While
the federal nutrition programs are critical in fighting hunger,
they are vastly underused in New York State. One of Hunger Action
Network’s goals is to increase utilization of these programs
while identifying and addressing the barriers that prevent more
people from participating in the programs. Please feel free to download
Hunger Action’s various promotional brochures for yourself
or to distribute to your community to help spread the word about
the programs. Hunger Action is also available to provide workshops
to your community about the nutrition programs or link you with
other local groups who can also provide assistance. Below is a list
of useful Federal Nutrition Programs containing program descriptions
