A Better Choice for NY A broad-based campaign that Hunger Action Network helps coordinates. The campaign addresses a number of progressive revenue options, including closing corporate tax loopholes. The web page also includes information on the state budget.

Bread for the World
Bread for the World is a Christian organization active nationwide that seeks justice for the world's hungry people by lobbying our nation's decision makers. Each year, their member congregations participate in a letter writing campaign on a specific issue.
In 2000, their effort "A Fair Share: Working to End Hunger" targets strengthening the
Food Stamp Program and raising the minimum wage.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities does at the national level what we try to do at the state level. They gauge the impact of policy changes on low-income Americans and try to influence government decision-makers.

The Center for Community Change supports and convenes grassroots organizations across the country. Our connection has been through asset-building strategies and advocacy on the state's use of the "welfare windfall".

The Center on Hunger and Poverty
The Center on Hunger and Poverty promotes policies which improve the lives and developmental capacities of low-income children and families in the nation. Established in 1990, the Center brings cutting-edge empirical evidence to the attention of policy makers, the press and the public, and provides advocacy groups and citizen organizations with the latest knowledge in relevant fields. Their publications and research are great resources. SENSES shares a similar philosophy with the center, and both of our organizations have become strong proponents of helping low-income folks to save money and generate assets.

The Center for Law and Social Policy has a number of position papers on their site. It also lists upcoming Audio Conferences, where you can listen in by conference call to impressive panelists discussing various policy issues.

Community Food Security Coalition
This national coalition defines food security as "the state in which all persons obtain a nutritionally adequate, culturally acceptable diet at all times through local non-emergency sources. Food security broadens the traditional conception of hunger, embracing a systemic view of the causes of hunger and poor nutrition within a community while identifying the changes necessary to prevent their occurrence. Food security programs confront hunger and poverty." Their website lists upcoming workshops, helpful publications, and contact people around the country.

Economic Policy Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank that seeks to broaden the public debate about strategies to achieve a prosperous and fair economy.

The Electronic Policy Network is a great place to start researching progressive issues. They've got links to think tanks, advocacy groups, and university centers that work on poverty and public policy.

The Institute for Women's Policy Research is a well-regarded D.C. organization that fights for gender equity and better social policies for women and families.

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) is a leading national organization working to improve public policies to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States.

The National Employment Law Project (NELP) advocates for the working poor and the unemployed. A non-profit organization, NELP focuses on women, part-time and immigrant workers, and other groups that face significant barriers to employment and government systems of support. NELP’s activities include policy advocacy, support for organizing, litigation, training, research, public education, and media strategies.

The New York City Employment and Training Coalition is an association of 180 workforce development practitioners--community based organizations, community colleges and union affiliated training programs--committed to providing high quality education, training and employment services to unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers. A key part of their work is disseminating the latest workforce development news, public policy and best practice research, funding and technical assistance opportunities, and new statutes and regulations via their website.

New York State Community Action Association NYSCAA is dedicated to the growth and education of Community Action Agencies in NYS to sustain their efforts in advocating and improving the lives of low-income New Yorkers. Check out NYSCAA’s online message board to chat with service providers about hunger issues and upcoming events.

Northeast Regional Anti-Hunger Network (NERAHN)
The Northeast Regional Anti-Hunger Network serves as the coalition of anti-hunger agencies from the seven states in the United States Department of Agriculture's Northeast region (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut). NERAHN was created in 1996 with a two-fold mission: 1)to reduce hunger by maximizing resources through collaborative efforts; and 2)to work collectively to design and implement action on state, regional and national levels. Hunger Action Network is one of the two New York State representatives to NERAHN.

The Nutrition Consortium of New York State
The goal of the Nutrition Consortium of New York State is to reduce hunger, with their efforts directed toward the issues contributing to hunger and potential solutions for the low income populations of our state. Their "Hunger Data Book" provides county-level statistics on hunger, poverty rates, participation in federal food programs, and more. Their website invites people to participate in their monthly Food Stamp Workgroup and other activities.

The Poverty and Race Research Action Council brings to light the economic and personal impact of ongoing discrimination against people of color.

www.unemployedworkers.org – An initiative of the National Employment Law Project, this on-line forum was created especially for the nation’s jobless and underemployed workers. This resource is available to help the unemployed learn more about the unemployment system, to share their experiences and concerns, and to participate in the national debate over aid to the jobless.

WMAD- The Welfare Made A Difference National Campaign seeks to reshape public perception about and public policy relating to welfare by documenting and disseminating the stories of the diverse group of people who have received welfare and struggled out of poverty with the help of welfare.
