Food Pantry Workers Want to Get COVID-19 Vaccine

(Spectrum News) A number of groups have been advocating to be added to the state’s vaccination group 1B, but pantry workers say they should have been included from the start.

Pantry workers and volunteers have been deemed essential throughout the pandemic, similar to grocery store employees.

But while grocery workers are eligible for the vaccine, those at food pantries are not. The Food Pantries for the Capital District is asking for that to change.

USDA will continue Farmers to Families Food Box Program

(NTV) U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture will purchase an additional $1.5 billion worth of food for nationwide distribution through the Farmers to Families Food Box Program.In total, USDA has distributed more than 132 million food boxes in support of American farmers and families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

GrowNYC delivers one millionth meal to New Yorkers in need during COVID pandemic

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — A New York City-funded program delivered its one millionth meal to city residents hardest hit by the COVID pandemic.

The GrowNYC Emergency Fresh Food Box program, officially distributed its one-millionth meal on Saturday morning as part of its ongoing efforts to alleviate food insecurity in New York communities.

Since April, GrowNYC has distributed thousands of free emergency food boxes per week to residents in need through partner organizations throughout the five boroughs.

Low-income children wait months for USDA food aid to replace school meals

Hunger Action Network calls for more help with food insecurity

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Food insecurity is an issue all year long, but this year is more severe than ever. Now, the Hunger Action Network of New York State is coming together and calling for help as we get closer to the holidays.

Natasha Pernicka, of the Food Pantries for the Capital District, said this is a time where the state and federal government need to step up and fully fund resources and pass emergency aid. With the drastic need in the community, she said the programs need to be consistent and reliable.

Capital Region Food Pantries Call For Additional Aid During Pandemic

Thanksgiving is typically a busy time for food pantries, both in terms of donations and use. But as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, Capital Region food pantries are calling on lawmakers for extra assistance.

Charities with the Hunger Action Network of New York State gathered at Albany’s St. Vincent De Paul Parish Monday to highlight a surge in food insecurity across the region.
